What Are The Different Types of Roofing Supplies Austin

Even though every building has a roof, not all roofing jobs will be the same or need the same set of tools and supplies. There’s a big difference between a residential roof and a commercial roof, and though there is some crossover, different materials and skills will be needed.  austin-texas-roof-tpo-1

Roofing a residential building is relatively easy if you know what you are doing. On a new building, once the rafters are up, they are covered with plywood and a layer of tar paper. Any vents, skylights, or chimneys are water proofed with flashing and sealants. Lastly, shingles or aluminum sheets are fastened to the roof. Once the peak is attached and the edges trimmed, the roof on your home is ready for the weather.

Commercial and industrial buildings are a bit different.  Because of the sheer size, a peaked roof isn’t practical, therefore, a flat roof is often used. Flat roofs aren’t able to shed water and snow easily.  In fact, if you view a flat roof after rain, you will often see small pools of water left over. Heat from the sun is transferred into the roofing material, melts snow and ice, and causes water to evaporate quicker. Even though the flat roof is standard for most industrial and commercial buildings, the materials used is not. Some of the most common materials are:

  • TPO roofing systems
  • Metal roofs
  • Single ply roofing systems
  • Modified Bitumen roofs
  • Rubber roofs
  • Built up Roofing systems
  • White roofs

These roofing systems all require different types of roofing materials, skilled crews, and sometimes different tools.

Flat roofs can even have coatings on them to preserve the existing roof or to add advantages to the roof such as reflective properties that can help you save money.
